This event presents a lecture by archaeologist Pavel Kolosnitsin titled "Novgorod Birch Bark Letters. Letters from the Middle Ages". The Novgorod birch bark letters are a unique historical source from the 11th to the 15th centuries, which narrates the lives of medieval Novgorodians. Among the more than 1200 preserved documents, there are personal letters, love notes, judicial complaints, lists of debtors, drafts of documents, exercises in writing, and much more. During the lecture, participants will learn how letters on birch bark came into being, the role they played in Great Novgorod, and will view some of the most interesting examples.
